Death bells for some beautiful trees!!!

On the way to Shreenagar, just before the turn to Kisan Nagar, there are some beautiful trees in the middle of the road. These are 'Kanikonna' (Casia fistula - the state flower of Kerala) trees that bloom every year to the delight of the passers-by. One feels thankful to the wonders of nature!

We don't know how long these trees will last, as recently TMC has built a wall and floor around the trees and 'beautified' them with a fountain and decorative lights. The decorative lights have already been submerged and become dysfunctional in the last rain, leaving the whole setup to the dangers of a possible electric short circuit. See the water logging inside!

We learn in school that trees breathe using their roots. If that is true, look how these trees are being strangulated! So much for development and beautification!

One wonders, if only TMC could cover the man-holes, clean the footpaths and fill the pot-holes, which are obviously plenty in these areas, instead of spending so much on frivolous and nature-unfriendly development!

  1. I am sorry sir .. The one correction to your blog..
In a tree, 'breathing' takes place in the leaf. Chlorophyll (the substance causing the green colour) absorbs the CO2 and uses it along with water to dissolve minerals taken up through the roots. After the chemical reaction is completed, the leaf releases oxygen and water vapor through its pores.

  2. Adarsh,
That is right. I stand corrected. I don't know where I got the idea of the trees being suffocated under concrete. Maybe, some article I read about trees in some other contexts. Or maybe my imagination of human beings put under the same circumstances.. Thanks for the comment.
